Hex Head Bolts

Hex head bolts, or hexagonal machine bolts, hex screws, are a common type of removable threaded fastener, consisting of an external hexagonal head and a threaded shank. They are used with pre-threaded holes or nuts. Hex bolts are available in full-thread and partial-thread types. The hexagonal head design allows tightening with wrenches or socket tools from multiple angles.

Hex Head Bolts Manufacturing Process

  • Coil: Raw material (carbon steel, alloy steel) for the manufacture of bolts, supplied in coils.
  • Annealing: Eliminate internal stresses in wire processing and increase its forgeability.
  • Acid washing: remove the oxide film on the surface of the wire, and surface lubrication to facilitate the drawing of wires.
  • Drawing: Cold drawing of coiled wire to the required wire diameter .
  • Beating (molding): The wire is cold forged (or hot forged) to achieve the shape and length (or thickness) of the semi-finished product.
  • Rolling: Rolling or tapping the molded semi-finished product to achieve the desired thread.
  • Heat treatment: Changing the mechanical properties of a screw.
  • Plating: according to the requirements of the surface treatment, such as increasing the screw’s anti-rust, beautiful and so on.
  • Packing: Plastic box, carton, pallet or customized packing.

Applications

Hex head bolts are widely used in machinery manufacturing, construction engineering, automotive industry, energy and power, bridges, docks, transportation, electronics, and home appliances. In machinery and construction, hex bolts provide reliable fastening for heavy equipment and steel structures. In automotive and energy applications, high-grade bolts such as 8.8, 10.9, and 12.9 deliver the strength required for demanding loads. Stellzin also supports customized hex bolts for electronics, home appliances, and other specific applications.

Hex Head Bolts: FAQ Guide

  • Coarse thread: suitable for general connection, easy to install.
  • Fine thread: suitable for occasions with high vibration, good anti-loosening performance.

If the thread is damaged, broken, loose, etc., appropriate treatment measures must be taken according to the specific circumstances.

  • Visual Inspection: Check for head misalignment and uniformity of the coating.
  • Go/No-Go Gauge: Test whether the threads meet standard specifications.
  • Hardness Test: Verify if the strength grade meets the required standards.
  • Use locking nuts, such as nylon-insert lock nuts.
  • Add spring washers or use a double-nut arrangement.
  • Apply thread-locking adhesive to enhance anti-loosening performance.

Hex head bolts are available in carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, copper alloy, and nickel-chromium alloy. Stellzin supplies both metric and imperial sizes with custom surface treatments to match your application.

Stellzin supplies hex bolts in grades 4.6, 4.8, 5.8, 8.8, 10.9, and 12.9, stainless steel grades A2-70, A2-80, A4-70, and A4-80, and ASTM A307, A354, and A449, in accordance with ISO, DIN, ASME, JIS, and other international standards.
